James Strock Biography

James Strock is an entrepreneur, professional speaker, and citizen servant.  He founded the Serve to Lead Group  in 1997.

Mr. Strock’s and the Company’s service includes: Leadership Development (21st century leadership, servant leadership, and presidential leadership); Environmental-Social-Governance; and various roles and tasks in a number of entrepreneurial, financial, and not-for-profit enterprises.

Entrepreneur

Mr. Strock is dedicated to creating extraordinary value through advancing the highest values of service.

His extensive experience serving the private, public, and not-for-profit sectors prepares him well for the opportunities and challenges of 21st century leadership, management, and communications.  The common thread in his diverse service is an unwavering commitment to entrepreneurial energy and excellence.

Mr. Strock serves in a wide range of roles, from chief executive to board member to investor to consultant; from starting up and turning around businesses and public agencies; to serving as an author and professional speaker; to serving as an adviser and mentor. He is skilled at assembling and managing project teams, including diverse disciplines in dispersed locations.

Mr. Strock, individually and as part of various teams and organizations, serves various functions, including: management, project management, financing, sales and marketing, stakeholder relations, government advocacy, communication (including new media), crisis communication, strategic planning, regulatory compliance, negotiation, mediation, facilitation, human resources, and training.

Serve to Lead Group serves diverse sectors including: finance, manufacturing, transportation, technology, defense, aerospace, health care, real estate, chemicals, professional services, insurance, environmental safety and health, remediation, clean tech, sustainability, energy, and medical cannabis.

Professional Speaker

James Strock is a recognized authority and renowned keynote speaker on 21st century leadership, management, and communication (including servant leadership, and presidential leadership).

He also presents seminars, and facilitates company and firm meetings and retreats, and serves as an emcee.

Mr. Strock has written three business bestsellers. Serve to Lead: Your Transformational 21st Century Leadership System has been praised as “the essential guidebook for 21st century leadership.”

Reagan on Leadership: Executive Lessons from the Great Communicator is available in a commemorative edition for the Reagan Centennial. With a new foreword by Tom Peters, and a new readers’ note, Reagan on Leadership brings the timeless lessons of one of the greatest leaders of the twentieth century into a new era.

Mr. Strock is also the author of Theodore Roosevelt on Leadership, which Colonel David Hackworth declared “a masterpiece.”

Each book is widely used in business and not-for profit organizations, educational institutions, government agencies and the military.

Citizen Servant

In addition to extensive business experience, he has served at high levels of government.

His combination of private and public sector service enables him to craft creative networks and teams to solve complex problems, to seize significant opportunities to add value. It’s also valuable for effectively engaging an array of stakeholders in high-stakes situations.

From 1991-97 Mr. Strock served in Governor Pete Wilson’s cabinet as California’s founding Secretary for Environmental Protection. Following confirmation by the state senate, he led the Cal/EPA, comprising 4000 employees, achieving worldwide environmental, energy and economic impact. During this time he also served on the Intergovernmental Policy Advisory Committee to the U.S. Trade Representative.

In 1989, President George H.W. Bush appointed, and the U.S. Senate confirmed Mr. Strock to serve as Assistant Administrator for Enforcement (chief law enforcement officer) of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. He led a major expansion and turn-around of the organization, while driving civil and criminal enforcement to record levels.

Mr. Strock served as general counsel and acting director of the U.S. Office of Personnel Management (the federal government’s human resources agency), member of the California State Personnel Board, special counsel to the U.S. Senate Environment & Public Works Committee, and as a lawyer in private practice.

Member

He serves on the board of CVR Energy (NYSE: CVI), and is a trustee of the Theodore Roosevelt Association. From 2010-12 he served as co-chair of the Arizona Governor’s Solar Energy Advisory Task Force. Mr. Strock is listed in Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in the World, and Who’s Who in Finance and Business. He is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and the Authors Guild.

Education

Mr. Strock was educated at public and private schools in Austin, Texas, and New Orleans, Louisiana, and holds degrees from Harvard College (A.B., magna cum laude, Phi Beta KappaCharles Joseph Bonaparte Scholarship) and Harvard Law School (J.D.). During law school he served as a teaching fellow for Professor Richard Neustadt’s course on presidential leadership. He subsequently studied literature for a year at New College, Oxford, on a Rotary Scholarship. In 1985 he received the Ross Essay Prize of the American Bar Association. He served to captain in the USAR-JAGC. Political Affiliation: Independent.
